Oh May, you have no idea how long we have waited for you! Spring, especially early Spring, can be very fickle here in Gettysburg. Some years April is like one’s great aunt, a little more finicky than others, but this year April has been downright persnickety and temperamental. In the past three days April has teased us with a beautiful, almost balmy afternoon with a high of 73 degrees, only to jerk us back to winter with snow and freezing rain on the day after Easter!
Well, April may be erratic and flighty; but her sister May is a kinder, gentler, and more dependable spirit. May is one of our favorite months here in activities, for in May everything is possible! May brings flowers but also outdoor concerts and movies, re-enactments, and the opening of our beautiful grand dame of a pool. This year, we are kicking off May with our Mother’s Day Celebration with a Mother’s Day Tea, and special crafts for moms! Battery D Artillery will be here as well, and we have an amazing lunch truck featuring authentic homemade Mexican food scheduled – La Chingada!
Saturday night – it’s Rock with Scott Karaoke at the Pavilion! May 13th-15th is our Focus on Fitness Weekend, with a GBR Fun Walk, Roll or Color Run, a health fair, classes in meditation, then a dance party with Rob and Rhonda on Saturday night! The Genco Family Grill will be our featured food truck and will have some healthy meal options that weekend, along with more traditional menu choices. May 20th-22nd is our Happy Camper Weekend, a time to recreate all those childhood camp memories, at least all the good ones! We will be doing some traditional camp crafts, and we have a super big surprise activity that involves the entire campground!! Our lips are sealed until that Friday but get ready for some outrageous and let’s just say, colorful fun!!
It is also the second weekend in May with a re-enactment group; a group new to GBR, the Confederation of Union Soldiers! The Genco Family Grill will be returning this weekend as well, with their amazing breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Saturday night, the Pavilion will be rocking to the music of Perseverance Rise. May brings it home with the official opening of summer – Memorial Day Weekend! Get ready for a Grill-Off, the pool’s Grand Opening, our monthly craft show with brand new vendors and re-enactors from the 61’st PA Volunteer Infantry. Memorial Day Weekend would not be complete without some great music at the Pavilion, and we could think of no band better than member favorite and GBR’s unofficial house band – LODI!
May is also when we are starting our campground concierge service. Come see us in the sunroom from 12-4 pm, Thursdays through Saturdays. If you need recommendations for dinner, something to do with the kids, want to sign-up for a ghost tour or would like us to help celebrate a special occasion, please let us know! There are definitely some weekends when members might want to plan to bring special items or costumes to participate, so we are giving you a sneak peek!
(1) June 4th – GBR Prom ~ This year our theme is “We Go Together!” Think famous couples like Bonnie and Clyde, Johnny and June, or dress as things that go together, like peanut butter and jelly. For inspiration, curl up with some hot cocoa and popcorn and watch the movie “Never Been Kissed.”
(2) June 10th – June 12th ~ It’s our Luau Weekend, so pack your Hawaiian shirts and coconut skirts! We will be having a real Hawaiian show with authentic dancers and music!
(3) June 25th – It’s a Crazy 80s dance, so dig out your legwarmers, bomber jackets and fingerless gloves! We are having a DJ and light show, as well as a photo booth with props! Members will be able to get unlimited prints of their pictures at the dance!
(4) August 19th – August 21st ~ Country Fair Weekend – bring your crafts and baked goods to enter the GBR Fair. You could win a blue ribbon! Then we have a big concert with Chris Woodward and Shindiggin’!

I see the colours everywhere as I drive around this beautiful place, we call Rocky Fork Ranch.

As the weather gets a little colder each night, we all snuggle one step closer to the campfire. The leaves have almost finished falling and everything looks beautiful. What a perfect season we have here in Georgia.
